Powering Change: Tackling Energy Poverty Together
In the second week of January 2025, @UNIVPM @DIISM @EnergySystems@UnivPM proudly hosted an impactful training session under the “POWERINGCITIZENS” project, dedicated to tackling energy poverty across the EU and Balkan regions.
We examined the far-reaching implications of energy poverty through engaging speeches with experts on the energy field, workshops, thought-provoking discussions, and collaborative exercises. This challenge leaves millions struggling to afford essential energy services, such as heating, cooling, and electricity. This issue does not only exacerbate social inequality but also poses serious health and environmental risks.
The training aimed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to analyse the causes of energy poverty and develop innovative, community-focused policy solutions. By prioritising the perspectives and needs of those most affected, we explored actionable strategies for creating more equitable and sustainable energy systems.
Highlights of the training included:
- In-depth exploration of energy poverty’s complexities, including affordability, access, and energy efficiency challenges.
- Collaborative policymaking sessions, where participants designed solutions tailored to local and regional contexts.
- Citizen-focused approaches, emphasising the role of public engagement in driving sustainable energy initiatives.
- Actionable plans for community energy solutions, promoting renewable energy adoption, energy-efficient practices, and citizen-owned energy models.

We also spotlighted innovative approaches, such as the realisation of renewable energy communities and new renewable energy projects, which empower individuals and neighborhoods to take charge of their energy futures. Case studies from across Europe and the Balkans provided practical insights into scalable and impactful solutions.
This initiative underscored the critical role citizens play in reshaping energy systems and influencing policy decisions. By fostering collaboration between communities, experts, and policymakers, we can create a unified approach to address energy poverty and accelerate the transition to sustainable energy.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the participants and partners— @CRN, @INZEB, @ETMI, @ECREC, and @BGF—for their dedication, expertise, and commitment to building a brighter energy future.
Together, we can make a difference. By placing citizens at the forefront of the solution, we can drive meaningful change and ensure access to clean, affordable energy for everyone.
